Ro-ro vessels are ships that are specifically designed to handle large wheeled cargo such as automobiles, trucks, construction machinery, and oversized or bulky items. BGI transports using ro-ro or load-on/load-off methods for shipping both rolling, and large or bulky project freight. Ro-ro vessels have built-in ramps that allow the rolling cargo to be driven or rolled on and off the vessel when in port. These ships pull up to a dock and lower a ramp allowing to be ‘rolled’ into the cargo bays of the ship. Ro-ro is usually the safest and least expensive way to handle an oversized cargo item or special project cargo.

Lift-on/Lift-off is another method for handling larger or oversized cargo. Lo-lo ships, sometimes referred to as multi-purpose ships, are vessels with onboard cranes that are used to load and unload cargo. Lo-lo vessels can operate from docks or ports without dockside handling equipment.
