Freight Forwarding Business Development

We are seeking an experienced Business Development Executive to expand our presence in the LA market. This new position is an excellent opportunity for motivated sales professionals who enjoy and thrive in a flexible, goal-driven environment.

You will be responsible for developing and acquiring a new freight forwarding business (All Modes & Services) in the LA market. You will report to senior management.

Additional responsibilities will include setting appointments, qualifying, warm and cold calls, pricing, proposal preparation, face-to-face client presentations, and providing innovative solutions to secure new business. You will also be expected to maintain client relationships through coordination with our operations team at our local Long Beach, and Rancho Dominguez, CA offices, and with our global partners.

Diligent CargoWise system use (CRM), pipeline reporting, and internal communication on sales cycles are key to success in this position.

Qualifications:

  • Proven track record of success in freight forwarding sales.
  • College degree (preferred, although a high school diploma and proven sales experience may be substituted for a degree).
  • Knowledge of greater Southern California regional markets.
  • Knowledge of Trans-Pacific, European, and Latin America trade lanes.
  • Multimodal sales (Air, Ocean, Import, Export, LCL/FCL, Brokerage FTL/LTL)
  • Demonstrated business development and territory management skills.
  • Familiarity with computers including programs such as Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and CRM systems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • At least 5 years of business development/sales success are required.

Full Job Description:

The Freight Forwarding – Station Manager provides strategic direction and leadership to the freight forwarding operation to include organizing the safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation of goods (via shipping lines, airlines, road and rail freight operators) keeping into consideration the type of goods and customer delivery requirements. The Station Manager has responsibility for the overall performance of the operations, customer service, and finances of the location. The Station Manager is accountable for achieving the highest level of profits through cost controls, productivity improvements, and revenue growth.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Investigating and planning the most appropriate route for a shipment, taking into account the perishable or hazardous nature of goods, cost, transit time, and security.
  • Negotiating contracts, transportation, and handling costs to meet margin requirements and ensure maximum profitability.
  • Arranging payment of freight and other charges or collection of payment on behalf of clients.
  • Utilizing e-commerce, internet technology, and satellite systems to enable real-time tracking of goods.
  • Maintaining communication and control through all phases of the journey, including the production of reports and statistical and unit-cost analysis.
  • Maintaining current knowledge of relevant legislation and other factors that could affect freight movement.
  • Monitors operation performance against financial goals reviews progress regularly with General Manager and communicates progress regularly with staff.
  • Assesses and understands market opportunities and trends, and how market conditions impact business performance and financials.
  • Develops and leverages a broad network of resources throughout the organization.
  • Nurtures long-term partnerships with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Formulate strategies to ensure revenue targets of location are accomplished.
  • Provides direction and guidance when addressing customer issues.
  • Ensures the proper systems, procedures, internal controls, quality standards, metrics, and quality control processes are in place.
  • Recommends process improvements that will create the most efficiency while maintaining service expectations.
  • Work closely with outside & inside sales teams, gain market share and development of RFQs.
  • Updating the team on a weekly basis in regards to the customer base, operational changes, and new sales.
  • Develop and manage a global network of air carriers, steamship lines, and agent relationships to ensure adequate capacity for their assigned market.
  • Other projects as assigned.

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required

  • Minimum of 8 years experience in global freight forwarding required.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in people management & development required.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a Cargo Wise user (our operating system).

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

Must be proficient with NVOCC (Non-Vessel Ocean Common Carrier), IAC (Indirect Air Carrier) regulations, and all other requirements necessary to operate a fully compliant freight forwarding operation.

  • Extensive knowledge of domestic and international transportation regulations, policies, and procedures required.
  • Must have knowledge of the Trans-Pacific/Asia trade lanes and markets.
  • Must have knowledge of the Trans-Atlantic/Europe trade lanes and markets.
  • Must possess extensive industry experience in all international modes of transportation, including air, ocean, FCL, LCL, and Project Cargo for both import and export activities.
  • Demonstrated record of success in performing in an environment of change, maintaining effectiveness while managing multiple and shifting priorities required.
  • Strong organizational skills, and ability to prioritize and effectively manage multiple tasks/projects.
  • Ability to collaborate with business partners on organizational initiatives.
  • Results-oriented with the drive to want to grow within the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, train & mentor a team of operators in delivering an extraordinary service experience to our key client

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years’ NVOCC & ocean freight forwarding operations experience, especially in Trans-Pacific trade
  • Superior time management skills working in a deadline-driven environment

  • Strong accounting and analytical skills with the ability to successfully manage critical strategic projects

We’re seeking an outstanding Export Operator for our Rancho Dominguez office. Our growth has led us to upgrade this position. Our ideal candidate will have several years of freight forwarding experience with a focus on Ocean and Air Exports.

The ideal candidate will have the following key skills:

  • Transportation background to include 3-5 years of experience with exports including Air Operations, full-container loads (FCL), less-than-container load (LCL), and roll-on/roll-off (RO/RO).
  • Minimum 2 years higher education (AA degree or higher)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including word and excel
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize
